Opium
addiction has a long history.
It was a problem in the 1850’s when morphine was developed as a non-addictive substitute.
Morphine was soon a bigger
addiction problem than opium.
The morphine problem was ‘solved’ with another opium derivative – Heroin, which proved to be even more addictive than either morphine or opium. In the middle and latter parts of the 20th century along come methadone as the cure for heroin.
You guessed it, methadone is stronger, more addictive, and more life threatening than any of the opium derivatives that came before it. Ask any methadone addict, or addiction professional dealing with
methadone addiction and withdrawal. By the 1990’s the mortality rate from opium derivatives was estimated to be 20 times greater than the general population.
There are many different types of
rehab programs using many different philosophies and methodologies.
Some are long, some are short, some are drug free, some are advocates of using drug therapies to handle other drug addictions, and some built the individual up, while others tear him down with a philosophy of being diseased for life.

Drug use occurs in an effort to relieve some form of pain, it may be physical but is often times emotional or a combination of the two.
This could be as simple as using alcohol or pot to avoid peer pressure as a teen, or the use of painkillers after an industrial accident.
Either way the drug is found to alleviate the symptoms.
The bigger the problem, the greater the discomfort and the more relief is sought. With continued
abuse the drugs begin to create mental and physical damage of their own and if continued unchecked the person’s life when sober is filled with despair and misery.
At this point all the person wants to do is escape these feelings by drugging or drinking them away. This is the downward spiral of addiction.
